About Our Name
We are always capital-t ‘The NROC Project’ or simply ‘NROC’.
Standard NROC Descriptions
WHO & WHAT
The NROC Project (NROC) is a non-profit organization that partners with educators to create courses and tools designed to improve how college and career readiness is approached and supported.
NROC provides open and low-cost courses and tools designed to recognize every student’s unique learning needs and preferences. These resources can be adapted and scaled to meet programmatic goals in a variety of instructional settings.
WHY
Today’s students face unprecedented barriers to academic and life success –– a problem that disproportionately impacts first-generation college goers, students of color, and low-income learners. Committed to growing access to high-quality educational opportunities, NROC supports closing this achievement gap.
NROC believes personal agency and well-being are directly linked to one’s freedom to learn and apply their knowledge. College and career readiness has a profound impact on individual, family, community, and societal wellness.
HOW
NROC collaborates with a powerful network of member institutions to deliver courses and tools that address the college and career readiness challenges students face today.
NROC works with distinguished academic partners and subject matter experts to develop innovative, rigorous educational content.
What does NROC stand for?
NETWORK | Educational institutions benefit from working together.
RESOURCES | Educators are empowered by high-quality, multi-media content and applications.
OPEN | Membership keeps costs low for institutions, and free for individuals.
COLLEGE & CAREER | We’re committed to helping students pursue academic and life success.
Standard NROC Funding Statement
The NROC Project is sustained by NROC member institutions, with support from The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the James Irvine Foundation, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

NROC English
The NROC Developmental English course is designed to help learners striving to meet college entrance requirements. The course integrates and compresses the standard developmental English curriculum — reading comprehension, writing, vocabulary building, grammar, punctuation, and usage skills — and allows learners to accelerate into college-credit courses. This sequence enables learners to make predictions about their reading, analyze rhetorical structures, build vocabulary, and improve writing mechanics. Learn more about NROC English.
